DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An incumbent to a position in this class performs work that involves coordinating and supervising health care programs for students in the City of Buffalo School District.  This is an administrative and supervisory position responsible for training and supervising school health staff as well as coordinating health services with outside agencies.  Duties are performed under direct supervision from the  Director of Social Emotional and Wellness Supports.  The incumbent supervises and supports,  Health Care Professionals (i.e. School Nurses) District Wellness Coordinators, and  other personnel assigned.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Oversees District compliance with state and federal student health regulations as outlined in New York State Education Law, Article 19 and NYSED Commissioner’s Regulations section 136.3
  • Develops health care policies and procedures for school district’s comprehensive school nursing program
  • Interprets laws and regulations regarding health services;
  • Provides training and support for health care professionals, nurses and any other personnel assigned to the programs;
  • Establishes program standards and guidelines for health care related agencies working for the Buffalo Public Schools;
  • Supervises providers of health-related services;
  • Acts as a liaison between the school district and school nurse providers;develops contracts for nursing services and monitors same;
  • Works closely with the Special Education and Athletics Departments to provide appropriate nursing staff for the summer program;
  • Prepares and analyzes administrative reports;
  • Prepares  budgets;
  • Performs related duties assigned by the Director of Social Emotional and Wellness Supports.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of pediatric and public and child health;
  • Thorough knowledge of the student health care needs;
  • Good knowledge of the principles of administration and supervision;
  • Ability to train and supervise staff personnel;
  • Ability to plan and coordinate the work of others;
  • Ability to develop and maintain a good working relationship with health professionals, school clinics, students and outside agencies;
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare and analyze timely reports;
  • Good judgment; tact; courtesy; sensitivity;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1.  Licensed as a Pediatric Physician issued by the NYS Department of Education

or

  1. Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner  issued by the NYS Department of Education and  three years of full-time experience  providing practitioner services to children or youth (PreK-12).

 

 Administrative experience preferred
