POSITION:                PHYSICAL THERAPIST – Permanent
                                 
SALARY:                    $52,870 - $64,014

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS   Physical Therapist plans and conducts prescribed treatment to handicapped children with physical disabilities resulting from disease or injury.    Upon referral by a physician and in accordance with a physician's diagnosis, incumbents perform physical diagnostic procedures, establishes individual treatment programs and administers and evaluates the physical therapy program.  Incumbents work on a day-to-day basis with individual children in performing therapy as prescribed by the treatment plan, instructing them in the use and care of therapeutic devices and encouraging their cooperation in the performance of therapy treatment.  As Licensed Physical Therapists, incumbents work with considerable independence in planning and carrying out a therapy program and in evaluating the patient's progress within the scope of accepted professional physical therapy practices.  Direct supervision is received from the Director of Revenue and Related Services for Special Education and incumbents have no supervisory responsibility.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
 
  • Following referral from Teacher, Parent, Committee on Special Education or a physician, a Physical Therapist evaluates a handicapped child's condition for the purposes of developing a physical therapy plan suitable to the condition and limitations of the patient;
  • -reviews the child's treatment goals and medical history record and interviews child and parent to determine extent of physical disability, medical treatment prescribed and any other clinical and rehabilitation services provided;
  • -performs specific evaluations to provide diagnostic information on the patient's functional level and extent of physical limitations.
  • Develops an individual physical therapy plan for the handicapped child including goals, type of treatment, equipment required and frequency and duration of treatment;
  • -schedules treatment for handicapped children;
  • Devises/adapts physical therapy equipment to meet the specific needs of patients;
  • Helps patients accomplish treatment plan and accept therapeutic devices by administering manual exercises;
  • Instructing, encouraging and assisting patients in performing physical activities, such as x, y, z and in using assistive and supportive devices, such as crutches, canes and walkers;
  • May be required to bend, lift and assist with the transfer of students from floor to chair, chair to standing and/or floor to standing
  • Ability to frequently perform pulling, pushing and lifting a minimum of 30 pounds.  Reasonable assistance may be requested in situations exceeding this amounts;
  • Ability for frequent standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • Serves as a consultant to the classroom teacher and specialists in the Buffalo Public Schools;
  • -puts all documentation into the District recommended Electronic billing system for Medicaid reimbursement daily;
  • Input evaluations and student goals into the Electronic IEP (Individual Education Plan) System;
  • Performs related work as required
 
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
 
  • Good knowledge of principles and methods of physical therapy and of the modalities of treatment;
  • Working knowledge of the operation of therapeutic modalities used in physical therapy;
  • Working knowledge of skeletal anatomy and the pathology involved in diseases or injuries resulting in physical handicap as applied to physical therapy;
  • Ability to develop and implement a physical therapy treatment plan to meet specific handicapped children's needs;
  • Ability to prepare accurate and timely written records and reports;
  • Ability to identify the handicapped child's progress or lack of progress;
  • Ability to recognize changes in signs and symptoms which warrant immediate attention of a physician or indicates the need for a change in program;
  • Ability to establish rapport and gain the confidence of the handicapped children;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Possession of a License and current registration as a Physical Therapist issued by the NYS Department of Education which must be presented at time of filing application
