POSITION:                  
The Interim Superintendent of Schools, Darren J. Brown., is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates
for the position of:
 
               SCHOOL COUNSELOR – PATHWAYS ACADEMY AT EAST HIGH SCHOOL

QUALIFICATIONS:     
Candidates must have a Master’s Degree in Counseling Education and must be currently employed in Buffalo Public Schools
and hold a NYS Permanent Certificate in Counseling Education.  Candidates should be knowledgeable in theoretical and
evidence based methodologies that focus on Comprehensive School Counselor philosophies.  A thorough understanding
of college admissions, data analysis and researching scholarship applications for students is necessary. Preference will be
given to individuals with Mental Health Certification and post-secondary transitioning.
 
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
The School Counselor will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
  • Will work at the Pathways Academy at East High School and the Central Registration Center office (School #12) to identify overage and under-credited students who are new to the district and/or entering grade 9.  The program will be a full-day program at the East High school site.
  • Coordinate high-quality educational plans that prepare students to complete high school or NYS Equivalency programs, enter training or employment programs, or further their education.
  • Meet with parents and students.
  • Evaluate student transcripts to determine the coursework necessary for graduation or pursuing a NYS Equivalency Diploma Pathway.
  • Assist students and parents in understanding test results and records and provide information for students, parents and teachers on required standardized tests.
  • Collaborate with teachers to provide guidance lessons and information.
  • Assist students in the preparation of a post-secondary planning time table for post-secondary education and/or training.
  • Review the status of students as it pertains to academic and behavioral progress.
  • Increase students’ awareness of the career and education planning process as well as for the individual careers.
  • Counsel students regarding attendance and tardiness.
  • Develop resources to assist students in learning educational survival skills including study skills and conflict resolution strategies.  
  • Develop resources and information for students on career development and job readiness.
  • Assist students with personal and social issues which impedes learning.
  • Provide counseling for students in the areas of self-esteem, communication skills, decision-making and relationship skills.
  • Assist with Crisis Intervention Services.
  • Collaborate with staff and instructional programming staff to meet the needs of this unique student population.
  • Coordinate the transfer of student records, IEPs, and other information that will optimize student learning.
  • Support student recruitment efforts and conduct intake assessments and interviews.
  • Responsible for participation in and co-facilitate orientation to the school for students and families.
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff development.
  • Collaborate with the work-based Coordinator to develop internship sites for students based on student interest.
 
APPOINTMENT:      
Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Interim Superintendent following assessment
of training, experience, credentials and evaluation of service.  Personal interviews will be scheduled where appropriate.
 
SALARY:                  Teachers salary schedule based on BTF contract + $300
