POSITION:               Principal Inventory Clerk - Provisional
 
SALARY:                  $39,876 – $47,303

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS 

An incumbent to a position in this class supervises and directs the maintenance of inventory control records in connection with materials, equipment and supplies for the Board of Education.  The Principal Inventory Control Clerk is responsible for the organization, revision and maintenance of control records covering all stock items used by the department.  Work is performed under the general direction of the Supervisor of Service Center, however, the incumbent has wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and decision making in anticipating the needs and re-ordering of depleted stock items.  Supervision is exercised over Inventory Clerks, Stock Clerks and clerical personnel assigned.
 
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 
  • Directs and supervises the physical inventory of supplies, materials and equipment;
  • Directs and maintains the manual and computerized control records systems for all expendable materials, supplies and equipment used for construction, mechanical, educational, custodial and/or business office purposes;
    • determines the re-order point for such items;
  • Establishes minimum and maximum stock requirements according to rates of consumption and program changes;
  • Supervises and directs the maintenance of necessary records and preparation of reports;
  • Initiates correspondence with vendors and maintains contact with them concerning delivery dates and availability of items;
  • Initiates travel requisitions and/or purchase requests to the Purchase Agent through approved authorities;
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods used in maintaining inventory records and systems;
  • Thorough knowledge of materials and supplies used in mechanical, education, custodial and/or business office areas;
  • Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment;
  • Good knowledge of the practices used in ordering, receiving and issuing materials and supplies;
  • Ability to make arithmetical computations rapidly and accurately;
  • Ability to supervise the work of others;
  • Ability to understand and interpret written material;
  • Ability to follow oral and written directions;
  • Initiative; Tact; good sound judgment;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
 
 
Promotional
 
Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Senior Inventory Clerk, Senior Stock Clerk or Superintendent of Supplies I for one year.
 
Open Competitive
 
(A)     Associates Degree from an accredited college or university and four years of full time experience where work involves the maintenance of inventory control in a large stock room or warehouse; one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity;
 
                                                                         OR
 
(B)     Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and six years of full time experience where work involves the maintenance of inventory control in a large stock room or warehouse; one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity;
 
                                                                        OR
 
(C)     an equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A and B.
 
 
 
NOTE:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full time experience requirements.
