POSITION:  STEAMFITTER – NON-COMPETITIVE
 
SALARY:  UNION SCALE
 
LOCATION:  Plant Department of Buffalo Schools
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: An incumbent to a position in this class works as a steamfitter at the skilled craft worker level installing and repairing of high and low pressure steam and hot water systems.  This work involves responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of steamfitting tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding what tasks to perform permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment.  Immediate supervision may be exercised over assigned employees.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
 
  • Inspects, installs and replaces steam and other piping, radiator, traps, valves, gauges, pumps, safety valves, and other accessories and fittings including related burner controls;
  • Grinds and packs valves and pumps;
  • Replaces worn pipe flanges and gaskets,
  • Repairs broken and defective pipelines;
  • Uses pipe dies, threading machines, pipe cutters, reamers and occasionally uses acetylene and arcwelding equipment;
  • Prepares estimates and requisitions materials and supplies;
  • May assists skilled craft workers in other trades;
  • Operates a small van or pick-up truck to and from worksites and vendor locations;
  • Receives, reviews, assigns, monitors and processes work orders as required;
  • Verified and processes employee daily records including time cards, travel logs, accident/compensation reports, personnel evaluation reports and other records and reports as required;
  • Consults with custodial engineers, administrators or vendors on required maintenance or repair activities needed in buildings or on equipment;
  • Consults with architects, inspections, and engineering staff in the preparation of construction documents;
  • Performs related work as required.
 
FULL PERFORMCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
 
  • Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions involved in the installation and maintenance of high and low pressure steam and hot water systems;
  • Working knowledge of automatic steam vacuum pumps and hot water condensate return pumps including burners and related controls;
  • General knowledge of oil burners, electric switches for pumps and hot water condensate return pumps including burners and relate4d controls;
  • General knowledge of oil burners, electric switches for pumps, thermostats, oil burner ignition and starting operations;
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications;
  • Ability to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
  • Ability to lay out work for self and others;
  • Good motor, hand and eye coordination;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  1. Successful completion of an Apprenticeship Program for STEAMFITTER (4 years) and ONE YEAR of full time experience as a Steamfitter at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level.
Certificate of Completion must be presented at time of filing application.
 
OR
 
 
  1. FIVE YEARS of full time verifiable experience as a Steamfitter, ONE YEAR of which must have been at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level.
 
Candidates who qualify under this provision must present at time of filing application an affidavit(s) from an employer(s) verifying the above work experience including the one year at the skilled craft worker level. This affidavit must include dates of employment and duties performed.
 
Special Requirement:  Possession of a current NYS Driver’s License to be presented at time of appointment and maintained during length of employment.
 
SKILLED CRAFT WORKER LEVEL is defined as work being performed independently; assisting or helping a Steamfitter is not considered to be skilled craft worker level.
