NOTICE OF POSITIONS
The Superintendent of Schools, Pamela C. Brown, Ed.D., is interested in receiving applications
from qualified candidates for the position of:

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a Master’s degree, and a New York State School District
Administrator (SDA), or School District Leader (SDL) certificate by the time of appointment. Candidates
must have a minimum of eight years combined certificated teaching and supervisory experience, with
a minimum of three (3) years at the supervisory level. Candidates with prior administrative experience
in an urban school district with a large racially and ethnically diverse population are preferred.
Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) has begun a period of change that seeks to transform the district and its
schools. With the appointment of Superintendent Pamela Brown and a significant level of local, state,
and federal attention and investment, Buffalo has an incredible opportunity to ensure that allof its
students graduate prepared to succeed in college or a well-paying career.
Currently, BPS has 58 schools serving approximately 34,000 students, of whom 79% qualify for free or
reduced price lunch and 77% are students of color. Of the 58 schools in the district, 28 have been given
“priority” status by the state and 16 more have been given “focus” status. Within the district, a sizable
number of students do not meet state standards, and only about half of those who attend high school
graduate with a diploma. Superintendent Brown is building a talented and committed leadership team
to partner with her in moving BPS towards the ambitious goal of preparing all students for success.
The Supervising Principal will play a crucial role in ensuring that BPS realizes it mission of college and
career readiness for all students in Buffalo. Each Supervising Principal, working collaboratively with a
Chief of School Leadership, will support approximately 15 school principals, helping to guide all school
improvement activities. This position represents one of the district’s key levers for turning around the
lowest performing schools and supporting continuous improvement in all schools.
The Supervising Principal will also serve as a strategic partner to the Chiefs of School Leadership in
re-imagining BPS as a service-oriented team providing support to schools as the primary unit of change.
Supervising Principals will act as thought partner, problem solver, and change agent to internal and
external stakeholders with an unwavering commitment to getting the job done.
The Supervising Principal reports to a Chiefs of School Leadership.
The Supervising Principals are a primary focus of the district’s transition to an earned-autonomy model for
schools that will be phased in over the next three years with the goal to provide schools the flexibility
necessary to serve their students effectively. As such, Supervising Principals will serve on a team of
professionals that will serve as a “one-stop” shop for school principals: Principals will be able to call one
number to have questions answered or support received across a variety of district functions (i.e., curriculum
and instruction, professional development, operations, facilities, technology, human resources, and finance).
Specifically, the Supervising Principal will be responsible for the following:
- Work with Chief of School Leadership to support district’s strategy for school turnaround, school improvement, and instruction and supports for students.
- Work with Chief of School Leadership to monitor implementation of district’s strategy for school turnaround, school improvement, and instruction and supports for students and adjust strategy as needed.
- Work with Chief of School Leadership to define and phase in the district’s “earned-autonomy” model for schools.
- Support the Chief of School Leadership, who serves as the district’s primary supervisor of and support provider for approximately 15 schools.
- Work with Chief of School Leadership to create a system that uses data to establish a culture of data-based decision making; build capacity to use data collaboratively, continuously and effectively to improve teaching and learning.
- Under guidance of Chief of School Leadership, help principals identify staff and student needs and suggest leadership strategies to promote continuous improvement in performance.
- Under guidance of Chief of School Leadership, conduct meetings with principals that focus on student achievement, student support, operations, parent and community involvement, data use, principal leadership.
- Under guidance of Chief of School Leadership, facilitate the professional development to principals and assistant principals (Leadership Institutes, Walkthroughs, Probational Administrators’ Meetings, Summer Retreat, Monthly Principals Meetings).
- Work with school leaders to ensure expertise in analyzing school data.
- Provide instructional leadership and management support to principals as a member of the team comprising a “one-stop” shop for addressing principals’ questions or concerns.
- Under guidance of Chief of School Leadership, work with school leaders to develop budgets and school improvement plans, identify appropriate resources, and develop school calendars.
- Other duties as assigned
School Community Relations
- Collaborate with school partners.
- Communicate with parents regarding school complaints and related issues.
- Under guidance of Chief of School Leadership, attend District Parenting Coordinating Council meetings.
Individuals serving as Supervising Principal will demonstrate the following:
- Strategic vision and courage to ensure that all students achieve
- Ability to work collaboratively to support school turnaround and school improvement
- Strong instructional leadership capabilities
- Strong management, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to develop, execute, and monitor impact of plans for school turnaround and improvement
- Proficiency managing a data-based, change-management process, and expertise in assessing, understanding and using data to identify a change in instructional practice that will accelerate learning for all students
Appointment will be made by the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience,
credentials and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate.
SALARY: Administrator’s schedule based on BCSA contract.
