NOTICE OF POSITION


POSITION:
The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kriner Cash, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of:

 

Curriculum Developer/Instructor: African American/Latino History Research Project

“Our Story: Weaving our History from Past to Present”

Middle Early College, Lafayette International School, & East Community High School

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must hold a valid NYS teaching certificate and be currently employed with the Buffalo Public Schools. Candidates must hold a valid certification in one of the following areas: Literacy, Elementary Education, English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Physical Education, Health, World Languages, Art, MUSIC, TESOL, CTE, Library Services, Attendance or School Counselor, or serve as an Instructional Technology Coach. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of African American History and/or Latin American History. For the Lafayette site, consideration will be given to the individual’s oral proficiency in Spanish.

 

The program will run on Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30 and alternate Saturdays from 9:00-12:00.  Dates for the program are November 1, 2017 –April 26, 2018.

For Middle Early College and East Community School Sites: In evaluating candidate’s qualifications, consideration will be given to individual’s familiarity with the following themes:

      • Hip-Hop as Social Justice: Using hip-hop as a pedagogic tool to analyze and write about literary texts in the works of artist that attend to issues of Social justice.

      • Ancient African Civilizations: Explores history, life, and culture, in various regions of Africa prior to the epoch of chattel slavery, and the growth and development slavery in the United States.

      • The fight for Social Justice: Buffalo’s African American History-The Niagara Movement Highlights the African American struggle for equality in Buffalo and explores significant individuals that had an impact on local and national history.

      • The Portrayal of African Americans in Media Over Time and Its Impact on Cultural Identity: Examines the significant power of mass media in defining public perceptions and attitudes towards African Americans.

      • National Current Events and Impact on Self: Making critical connections between community, national, and global identities within the historical context of African American history and culture.

For Lafayette Community School Site: In evaluating candidate’s qualifications, consideration will also be given to individual’s familiarity with the following themes:

    •  
  • The Puerto Rican Diaspora: Examination of previous and current waves of Puerto Ricans moving to New York State. Explores the commonalities and differences between the generations of migrants. This strand explores the origins and evolution of cultural archetypes. Students could engage in a comparative lyrical analysis of modern and traditional song.
  • Inter-Latino Discord: This strand will uncover some of the root causes of discord between groups of Latinos and develop action steps towards bridging relationships and fostering unity.
  • Campo y El Barrio: The impact on growth and decline of industry and urbanization on life on La Isla Del Encanto.
  • The Portrayal of Latinos in Media Over Time and Its Impact on Cultural Identity: Examines the significant power of mass media in defining public perceptions and attitudes towards Latinos.

Responsibilities:
Curriculum Developers/Instructors shall report to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum Assessment and Instruction.

The Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, develop and deliver curriculum for 12 week research project that will take place one day per week during afterschool hours and two Saturdays per month;
  • Identify specific learning targets for each mini module;
  • Develop compendium of primary source documents, articles, book chapters which will be bound for student use
  • Guide students through highly engaging inquiry based learning experiences whereby they will be able to integrate their personal narratives with their respective historical and cultural contexts;
  • Provide structure and guidance for individual student culminating research projects/presentations;
  • Integrate technology into the learning experience;
  • Collect qualitative data to measure program efficacy;
  • Manage instructional supplies
  • Chaperone students on local, state and national extended learning field trips that will expand student learning of topics.


APPOINTMENT:
Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of training, experience, certifications, credentials and personal interview.

SALARY:            Contractual Rate for Curriculum Development and after school extended learning opportunities during after school and Saturday programming.
