BUFFALO BOARD OF EDUCATION VACANCY
 
APPLICANTS MUST BE CITY OF BUFFALO RESIDENTS 90 PRIOR TO APPLICATION. PROOF OF RESIDENCY WILL BE REQUIRED.
 
POSITION:                   Plumber - Permanent
 
SALARY:                      UNION SCALE - $54.16 per hour (rate +fringe)
 
LOCATION:                  Facilities Department-Service Center-45/55 Bailey Ave Bflo, NY 14220

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  An incumbent to a position in this class works as a skilled craft worker in the installation and repair of water and heating systems.  This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of plumbing tasks requiring a thorough knowledge of the trade.  In an emergency, he may be required to answer calls 24 hours a day.  General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment.  Immediate supervision may be exercised over employees assigned. 
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
 
  • Investigates water leaks and helps to repair them;
  • Installs plumbing lines and repairs plugged drains and traps;
  • Installs hot water heating tanks, toilet fixtures and wash sinks;
  • Repairs plumbing and sewage lines;
  • Turns water on or off by operating control valves;
  • Operates a truck in the transportation of materials and supplies;
  • -drives to and from work sites and vendor locations;
  • Cares for tools, supplies and equipment;
  • Requisitions the necessary materials and supplies as needed;
  • Performs related work as required.
 
In addition, employees working for the Board of Education will be required to perform the following:
 
 
  • Receives, reviews, assigns, monitors and processes work orders as required;
  • Verifies and processes employee daily records including time cards, travel logs, accident/compensation reports, personnel evaluation reports and other records and reports as required;
  • Consults with custodial engineers, administrators or vendors on required maintenance or repair activities needed in buildings or on equipment;
  • Consults with architects, inspections and engineering staff in the preparation of construction documents.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
 
  • Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the plumbing trade;
  • Ability to do lay out copper pipe work;
  • Ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;
  • Ability to lay out work for self and others;
  • Good motor, hand and eye coordination; Manual dexterity;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
CANDIDATES MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING;
 
(A)    Successful Completion of an Apprenticeship Program for PLUMBER (4 Years) and ONE YEAR of full time experience as a Plumber at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level. Certificate of Completion of the Apprenticeship Program must be presented at time of filing application.

OR
 
(B)    FIVE YEARS of full time verifiable work experience as a Plumber, ONE YEAR of which must have been at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level. Candidates who qualify under this provision must present at time of filing application an affidavit(s) from an employer(s) verifying the above work experience Plumber including the one year at the skilled craft worker level. This affidavit must include dates of employment and duties performed.
 
 
All candidates must present at time of filing application either a Certificate of Completion of an Apprenticeship Program OR the required affidavit(s) from an employer(s). 
 
Special Requirement
 
(A)    Possession of a current JOURNEYMAN PLUMBER'S LICENSE issued by the City of Buffalo in accordance with City Ordinances and must be presented at time of filing application.
 
(B)    Possession of a current NYS Drivers License which must be presented at time of appointment.
 
 
SKILLED CRAFT WORKER LEVEL is defined as working independently; assisting or helping a Plumber is not considered skilled craft work level. 
 
NOTE:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet the full time experience requirement.
