QUALIFICATIONS:   Any person employed as a teacher assistant, must hold one of the following credentials: temporary license, continuing certificate, or Level I, II, III or Para-Professional certificate. Since February 2, 2004, all teacher assistant candidates are required to take the Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Tests (ATAS)
unless the candidate took and achieved a qualifying score on the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) which is a requirement for classroom teacher certification.  Preference will be given to individuals of Native American origin, or those who have working experience with the Native American population.

  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Ability to speak and write effectively
  • Working knowledge of the school environment and the population it serves

DUTIES:    The role of teacher assistant is to provide direct instructional services to the students
under the supervision of the principal and the direction of certified teachers who are
responsible for the students’ instruction.
 
  • Working with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects*
  • Providing the teacher with information about pupils that will assist the teacher in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
  • Assisting pupils in the use of available instructional resources, and assisting in the development of appropriate learning experiences*
  • Utilizing their own special skills and abilities by assisting in instructional programs in areas such as: foreign language, arts, crafts, music and similar projects*
  • Communicating effectively with the instructional team, including the classroom teacher, other professional staff and parents
  • Attending to the physical needs of the students, as appropriate
  • Assisting in related institutional work as required

APPOINTMENT:       Appointments are subject to the review of the Board of Education upon the recommendation
of the Superintendent following the approval of the City of Buffalo Civil Service Division. Personal interviews shall
be scheduled where appropriate.
 
 
FUNDING:           This position is funded by the Indian Education Grant.  
The term "Indian preference laws" means section 472 of this title or any other provision of law granting a preference to Indians in promotions and other personnel actions.  The term "Bureau of Indian Affairs" means (A) the Bureau of Indian Affairs and (B) all other organizational units in the Department of the Interior directly and primarily related to providing services to Indians and in which positions are filled in accordance with the Indian preference laws.

L. 95-561 was omitted in the general amendment of chapter 22 (§2001 et seq.) of this title by Pub. L. 103-382, title III, §381, Oct. 20, 1994, 108 Stat. 3979. Pub. L. 103-382 enacted a new section 1131 of Pub.
