POSITION:            Supervisor of Service Center - Provisional

SALARY:               $54,455 - $66,623

LOCATION:            Service Center, 95 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, New York  14220


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: 

The incumbent of the position in this class supervises and has immediate charge of the instructional equipment and furniture repair crews, shop operations, and services in the Service Center of the Board of Education, as assigned.  This is important supervisory work involving responsibility for the detailed operation of shops and departments in the Service Center.  It requires the exercise of the independent judgment in planning and managing complex clerical and repair activities and/or supervising the pick-up and delivery, receipt, storage and issuance of materials and supplies.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief Operating Officer.  Supervision is exercised over skilled, and semi-skilled and unskilled personnel assigned to the Service Center, including stock and clerical personnel.  Performs related work as required. 
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Supervises and has immediate charge of instructional and furniture equipment repair crews, shop operations, supply, material, furniture and equipment storage, and services as assigned.  Services include pick-up delivery, and distribution of supplies, furniture, equipment, and instructional, materials;
Prepares activity reports;
Plans, assigns, and supervises work of employees in Service Center departments as assigned;
May supervise a variety of complex stock and inventory records on materials, supplies and equipment in storage and/or service shops and departments;
Directs the locations and method of storage supplies and materials;
Prepares and executes the scheduling and work progress of instructional and furniture equipment repair and the rehabilitation of equipment in shops and schools as
assigned;
Supervises operations for maintenance, cleanliness and safety;
Initiates requests for repair parts and materials;
Keeps accurate cost records of repairs and compiles periodic reports as directed. 
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of materials and equipment and stock handling and recordkeeping procedure; considerable knowledge of office technology, procedures and methods; ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to get along well with others; ability to solve complex clerical and operational problems efficiently; initiative and resourcefulness; integrity; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 
 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
Promotional:  Continuous and permanent status in any city department at the supervisory level in a position
                        involving the handling of materials, equipment, stock and recordkeeping procedures for one

                        year. 
 
Open Competitive:
  1. Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university and four years of full-time experience involving the handling of materials, equipment, stock and recordkeeping procedures, of which one year must have been in supervisory capacity;
 
                           OR
  1. Associate’s Degree from an accredited junior college, business or technical institute and six years of full-time experience involving the handling of materials, equipment, stock and recordkeeping procedures, of which one year must have been in a supervisory capacity;
 
                          OR
 
  1. High school graduation and eight years of full-time experience involving the handling of materials, equipment, stock and recordkeeping procedures, of which one year must have been in a supervisory capacity;
 
                            OR
 
  1. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defines by the limits of (A) through (C).
 
NOTE:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
