POSITION: Sheet Metal Worker - Non- Competitive
SALARY: Per Union Scale
LOCATION: Grounds and Repair, 95 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14220
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: An incumbent to a position in this class works as a Sheet Metal Worker at the skilled craft worker level. This work involves responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of tasks including the laying out, cutting, forming, riveting, and soldering of materials. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed permitting leeway for planning the details of assignments. Immediate supervision may be exercised over assigned employees.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Lays out work for self or assistants;
Repairs skylights, gutters and drains;
Repairs slate, tile, tin, gravel and tar paper roofs
Fabricates and installs roof ventilators, skylight frames, gutters and drains;
Makes metal cans, boxes, signs, cabinets, lockers, kitchen equipment and parts for ventilating and exhaust equipment;
Repairs a variety of metal equipment;
May do welding and brazing work;
Requisitions the necessary materials and supplies as needed;
Drives to and from work site and vendor locations;
Performs related work as required.
In addition, employees working for the Board of Education will be required to perform the following:
Receives, reviews, assigns, monitors and processes work orders as required;
Verified and processes employee daily records including time cards, travel logs, accident/compensation reports, personnel evaluation reports and other records and reports as required.
Consults with custodial engineers, administrators or vendors on required maintenance or repair activities needed in buildings or on equipment;
Consults with architects, inspections and engineering staff in the preparation of construction documents,
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, materials, terminology and accident precautions of the trade;
Ability to use tools, materials and equipment of the trade;
Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
Ability to climb and work in high places;
Good motor, hand and eye coordination;
Manual dexterity;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
CANDIDATES MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
- Successful Completion of an Apprenticeship Program for Sheet Metal Worker (4 years) and ONE YEAR of full time experience as a Sheet Metal Worker at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level.
Certificate of Completion must be presented at time of filing application
OR
- FIVE YEARS of full-time verifiable experience as a Sheet Metal Worker, ONE YEAR of which must have been at the skilled craft worker (journeyman) level.
All candidates must present at time of filing application with the certificate of Completion of an Apprenticeship Program OR the required affidavit(s) from an employer(s).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a current NYS Drivers License which must be presented at time of appointment.
SKILLED CRAFT WORKER LEVEL is defined as working independently; assisting or helping a sheet metal Worker is not considered skilled craft worker level.
NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet the full time experience requirements.
