POSITION:      Health Care Aide (Summer School)
 
SALARY:         $15.11 - 17.01 per hr

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
An incumbent to a position in this class gives necessary support to students with traumatic brain injury and other physical handicap as specified in the Students Individual Education Program (IEP).  Federal and State Law ensures the rights of students with disabilities to a free, appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment.  It also ensures that children with disabilities must be educated with their non-disabled peers to the maximum extent appropriate with necessary supports provided.  The Health Care Aide helps physically disabled students with a wide range of support services which are essential to ensure the safety, health and general well-being of students.  This position differs from a Teacher Aide in that the Health Care Aide requires the performance of specific duties for the physically handicapped students and the job qualifications reflect same.  Immediate supervision is received from the student's special education teacher.  General supervision may be received from the school principal.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
 

  • Assists in implementing Students Individual Education Program (IEP) under the supervision of a teacher or licensed therapist;
  • Assists in the use of adaptive educational devices and equipment; maintains inventory of same for students use;
  • Makes daily entries in log describing pupil interactions with materials, persons, instruction and any other health or relevant information;
  • Physically lifts students into seats, wheelchairs, tables, etc. as necessary; may be required to use and operate Hoyer lifts, hydraulic lifts, transfer boards, etc.;
  • Transports and escorts children via wheelchair, crutches, gurney, quad canes, etc. from place to place;
  • Positions students in chairs or adaptive devices using appropriate techniques as necessary;
  • Safely and appropriately manages body mechanics specific to a situation, i.e., seizure disorders (safety precautions), transferring techniques (knowing number of persons or types of equipment needed);
  • Assists students in the pool;
  • Performs personal care duties to students in daily routines, including toileting, maintenance of bowel and bladder continence according to pupils Individual Education Program, handling and disposing of waste according to OSHA standards and spread of diseases, hand washing principles, disinfection, cleaning and storage of equipment as applies;
  • -defers to a licensed professional for catheterized or trachea tube suctioning, etc.;
  • Assists School Nurse when necessary.
  • Spoon feed students in need of such assistance;
  • Receives training and performs first level maintenance of adaptive educational devices and equipment;
  • Acquires new skills via in-service programs;
  • Performs related tasks as maybe required by the Students Individual Education Program.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
 
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of typical child growth and development;
  • Working knowledge of the use and function of adaptive educational devices;
  • Working knowledge of the principles and safety precautions of transporting and transferring students with wheel chairs, lifts, ambulation assistive devices;
  • Working knowledge of body alignments, positioning, special aids, sensory loss factors, seizure disorder and safety factors of students with traumatic brain injury and other physical handicaps;
  • Ability to understand verbal and non-verbal communication of students with disabilities;
  • Ability to maintain accurate record-keeping concerning the events in the student's daily life;
  • Ability to understand and use the appropriate channels of communication for sharing comments/suggestions;
  • Ability to give emotional support and encouragement to students in a positive manner;
  • Ability to help students gain independence to the best of their ability in accordance with the goals of the Individual Educational Program;
  • Alertness in providing safety during play and physical recreation activities;
  • Ability to interact with teachers, other personnel and the student;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
(A)  Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Child Care, Human Services Program, or Nursing Program;

OR
 
(B)  Graduation from High School, GED, or Equivalency Diploma and two years of full time experiance working with physically handicapped individuals in and educational or health related services

OR
 
(C)  Possession of a certificate certifying as a Nurses Assistant or Child Care Aid which must be presented at time of filing application;

OR
 
(D)  Possession of a license and current registration issued by the State Education Department to practice in NYS as a Licensed Practical Nurse which must be presented at the time of filing application.
 
(E)  or an equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A through E.
