POSITION:      Audio Visual Equipment Technician

SALARY:         $36,148 - $39,426

LOCATION:    Service Center

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient and workmanlike performance of a variety of tasks connected with the repair and maintenance of old as well as state-of the–art audio-visual equipment including, but not limited to: all types of radios, all types of televisions including closed-circuit, studio monitors, etc., stereo-record players, language laboratories, hard of hearing equipment, microphones, public address systems, intercoms, tape recorders (cassette and reel), filmstrip projectors, video tape recorders, opaque projectors, overhead projectors, camcorders, compact disc players, DVD players, and any other manual, electric and electronic audio visual equipment. Incumbents must have knowledge of basic electronics, semi-conductors, integrated circuits, digital logic and programming. S/he acts as a troubleshooter, determines the cause of the problem, makes repairs or replaces parts, and recommends whether on-site or in-shop repairs are needed. Immediate supervision is received from the Head Audio-Visual Equipment Technician and supervision may be exercised over personnel assigned.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
 
  • Repairs and performs routine maintenance work on audio-visual equipment and related components;
  • Repairs electrical equipment with solid state electronic components including service to intercoms/PA systems, house telephones/intercoms, surveillance equipment, etc.;
    • investigates and identifies equipment malfunctions;
    • recommends solutions for recurring problems;
  • Maintains equipment and makes requests for materials, supplies and parts as needed for repairs;
  • Receives, reviews, completes and processes work orders as required;
  • Consults with custodial engineers, administrators or vendors on required maintenance or repair activities needed on audio-visual equipment;
  • Picks up and delivers equipment as necessary;
  • Operates a variety of standard and state-of-the-art equipment used in diagnostic/troubleshooting and repair including but not limited to multimeters, isolation transformers, “foxhound” tone generator/tracer set, audio signal generator, etc.;
  • Drives to and from work sites and vendor locations;
  • Performs related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
 
  • Thorough knowledge of standard and state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment and electronic repair methods;
  • Thorough knowledge of terminology, tools and accident precautions of the trade;
  • Good knowledge of electrical circuitry and related components;
  • Demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to audio-visual equipment;
  • Ability to trace circuits from blueprints for wiring of power supplies and other electronic equipment;
  • Ability to be trained for advanced and modern technology of new equipment;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
  1. Associate’s Degree from an accredited college, university or technical institute in Electronics Technology or a closely related field and one year of full-time experience in the field of maintaining and repairing electronic and mechanical audio-visual equipment;
  2. Satisfactory completion of a recognized factory training school or a certified course for advanced audio-visual equipment, and two years of full-time experience in the field of maintaining and repairing electronic and mechanical audio-visual equipment;
  3. Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and three years of full-time experience in the field of maintaining and repairing electronic and mechanical audio-visual equipment;
  4. An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A, B and C.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a current NYS Driver’s License to be presented at time of appointment and maintained during length of employment.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
