POSITION:               SCHOOL NURSE – Provisional 
                                 
SALARY:                  $42,749 - 50,218
 
LOCATION:             Department of Social, Emotional, and Wellness Supports – East High School, 820 North Hampton St,Buffalo NY 14211 Rm 304
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS;  An incumbent to a position in this class renders professional nursing services in the examination and care of school children for the Board of Education.  This is responsible professional nursing work requiring medical and dental services.  The School Nurse has considerable leeway in the exercise of independent judgment in performing daily health inspections and related nursing services to school children.  Duties are performed under the immediate supervision of the School Principal and in accordance with established medical procedures and objectives outlined by school authorities.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
 
  • Supervises, coordinates and arranges the medical and dental services in city schools for the Board of Education;
  • Obtains medical history and conducts examinations of children;
  • Makes screening tests and does immunizations;
  • Provides health and dental health education for children and parents;
  • Arranges medical care treatment and dental care services to ensure that each child, accompanied by his parent, actually receives all medical and dental examinations and treatment;
  • Conducts procedures for after-care services;
  • Keeps a medical record for each child;
  • Works closely with all staff members, especially the School Social Worker and the Psychologist;
  • Works closely with parents and makes home visits;
  • Demonstrates daily health inspection procedures in each classroom;
  • Maintains records and submits reports as required.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
 
  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures and terminology;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public and child health;
  • Ability to handle and get along well with children;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relations with teachers and the general public;
  • Sound professional judgment; Initiative and resourcefulness;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 
 
 
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Possession of a license and current registration as a REGISTERED NURSE issued by the NYS Department of Education which must be presented at time of filing application.
