POSITION:  The Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kriner Cash, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of:

 

ATTENDANCE SUPPORT TEACHER

QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree and be certified in School Attendance. It is required that candidates must attach a PDF or screen shot of their certifications. Teachers and administrators with this certification are eligible to apply. Those with certifications in Guidance Counseling, School Social Work, School Psychology or another Pupil Personnel area are encouraged to apply. It is also acceptable to hold certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL). must have a minimum of three years of approved and appropriate experience in one of the above areas or equivalent. Ability to communicate in languages besides English is a plus. Experience in a professional position in business as well as experience in education is also desirable. Individuals with experience in Special Education and Student Support Services are preferred.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The responsibilities of an Attendance Support Teacher (AST) are many and varied. Attendance Support Teachers exist to support the efforts of parents/guardians and our individual school buildings to improve the level of student attendance throughout the district. The responsibilities of an AST include:

  • Assist administrative and other building personnel in planning and executing a successful student attendance program at every assigned school. This plan will be included in the CEP for the school.
  • Report cases of suspected Educational Neglect and/or child abuse as per BPS and New York State guidelines.
  • Assist in the early identification and diagnosis of attendance problems of BPS students by conducting parent meetings at home, in school or at the parent’s workplace.
  • Work to improve those aspects of BPS school operations that may act as barriers to regular student attendance. These could include such areas as transportation issues, school uniforms, scheduling, and placement.
  • Create individual Attendance Improvement Plans (AIP) for students with chronic and severe chronic attendance levels.
  • Consistently communicate New York’s Compulsory Attendance Law and district attendance regulations to students AND parents and educate families on the importance of excellent school attendance.
  • Provide analysis of attendance data for school personnel, Parent Facilitators, students & families, community members and others as directed by the Supervisor of Student Support Services.
  • Follow up on students who do not return to their school after the completion of a long term suspension.
  • Check on the status of Family and City Court warrants that have been issued for students.
  • Refer students/parents to appropriate school and community resources.
  • Make status investigations on non-compliant families in the Home Schooling (Parental Taught) program.
  • Assist law enforcement personnel with identification and apprehension of truants.
  • Partner with school personnel such as Student Support Teams, PBIS and Safe and Civil School teams, Parent Engagement Liaisons and school attendance designees to continuously improve attendance operations at the school level.
  • Keep abreast of all new Education laws on the Federal and State levels relating to the Pupil Personnel area of school operations.
  • Be a source for important trends and information relating to school attendance, dropout prevention and other topics.
  • Maintain complete electronic and paper records of all contacts as directed by the Supervisor of Student Support Services. Submit monthly productivity reports. Submit bi-weekly reports documenting contacts with students who are chronically absent.
  • Provide appropriate attendance interventions to increase satisfactory attendance levels (5% or fewer absences) in assigned schools. At the same time, reduce the levels of chronic (10% but less than 20%) and severe chronic absence (20% or greater) in the same schools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Student Support Services.

 

APPOINTMENT:

Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following assessment of credentials, certification, experience and evaluation of service. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate.
