DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Registration Cultural Aide provides assistance at the Central Registration Center (CRC) and the Multilingual Department of the Buffalo Public Schools to students, families and staff members during the registration process. Incumbents have understanding of the heritage, culture, lifestyle and communication of new limited multilingual English language learners and families who speak languages other than English in the District.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
- Works directly with Arabic Speaking individuals;
- Assists in the review and development of Arabic and English language registration materials and diagnostic assessments;
- Assist parents and students with the registration process
- Communicates CRC policies, procedures and expectations to the families and the communities they serve;
- Prepare and conduct parent orientations
- Have knowledge of Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), assessments, school expectations for English Language Learners (ELLs), program goals and requirements or Bilingual Education programs
- Maintain orientation agendas and sign in sheets
- Translates notices, signs and documents required for assessment, registration and placement;
- Administers the Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) questionnaire and diagnostic tool;
- Provides CRC and Multilingual Department staff information relative to traditions, cultures and lifestyles of students and families whose first language is other than English;
- Conducts training at schools or other locations as identified or requested
- Informs District leadership of the needs of the multilingual students and families
- Assist in maintaining compliance data on students whose first language is other than English
- Assists in maintaining data of those students who require special education services
- Acts as a liaison between community, District, school and home/parents of students;
- Advises parents if students are having difficulty at school, i.e. academic/disciplinary
- Assist in the development of a resource center for new students and families of languages other than English entering the District
- Facilitate family communication and ensure they receive information in a language they best understand
- Acts as an interpreter and assist in planning Multilingual Department parent trainings and the monthly drop-in center
- Interprets at District meetings and at schools if necessary;
- Performs related duties as required.

- Ability to present information clearly both orally and in writing in both English and Arabic;
- Thorough knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment;
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions;
- Ability to work closely with students, parents/guardians, residents, community groups/organizations and school personnel;
- Ability to get along well with others;
- Courtesy; tact; sensitivity; confidentiality
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open CompetitiveGraduation from High School, Business School, GED or Equivalency Diploma. Applicants must have the ability to fluently speak and translate the English and Arabic language, both orally and in writing.
