DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

A Senior Drafting Technician performs the more difficult and complex drafting and computation work in connection with the preparation of rough and finished drawings, by hand or CAD (computer assisted drafting).  Incumbents are responsible for the more difficult engineering drafting tasks entailing the use of a wide range of drafting techniques, procedures, instruments, materials and technical reference manuals.  Incumbents work with considerable technical independence, select applicable information from standard references, manuals and guides and independently resolve problems that they have previously encountered. They utilize appropriate drafting tools and equipment and follow accepted drafting procedures and departmental policy.  Positions at the senior level are supervised by a professional engineer or architect and may supervise one or more Drafting Technicians.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 
  • Prepares designs and plans for the development of parks, playgrounds, golf courses, buildings, structures, landscapes, etc., by hand or CAD (computer assisted drafting);
    • -prepares drawings following rough sketches, oral or written instructions;
    • -draws contract plans determining appropriate detail and scale and the size and spacing of freehand and mechanical lettering;
    • -makes simple mathematical computations using standardize tables and formulas;
  • Prepares, designs and plans for roadway pavements;
  • Prepares plans, profiles and detailed drawings for water mains, sanitary sewer and storm drains, junction, overflow and intercepting chambers;
    • -makes computations for sewer and storm drains;
  • Prepares specifications and cost estimates;
  • May review plans prepared by contractors for compliance with contract specifications;
  • Performs related work as required.
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 
  • Working knowledge of drafting procedures and methods;
  • Working knowledge of the care and use of drafting instruments and materials, including CAD (computer assisted drafting);
  • Working knowledge of the symbols, terms and accepted standards used in drafting activities;
  • Ability to prepare drawings that are neat and accurate;
  • Ability to print neatly and legibly both by freehand and mechanical devices in accordance with accepted drafting standards;
  • Ability to make simple mathematical computations using standardized tables and formulas;
  • Ability to make construction cost estimates;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 
PROMOTIONAL:

Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Drafting Technician for one year.
 
OPEN COMPETITIVE:

(A)  Associate’s Degree from an accredited junior college or technical institute in Architectural Technology or Drafting-Mechanical or a closely related field;
 
OR
 
(B)  Graduation from High School GED or Equivalency Diploma with course work in drafting, mechanical drafting or architectural drafting and two years of full-time experience in drafting work (by hand and/or CAD-computer assisted drafting);
 
OR
 
(C)  An equivalent combination of the foregoing as defined within the limits of (A) and (B).
 
ACCEPTABLE EQUIVALENT COMBINATION:

Certificate issued from an accredited technical institute in Mechanical Drafting and Design or Architectural Drawing.
