Distinguishing Features of the Class

An incumbent in a position in this class is responsible for coordinating the Buffalo School District’s health programs and policies.  S/he will ensure compliance with standards and guidelines, scope of services and all other requirements as outlined in the Coordinated School Health program, to create a culture of health and well-being in the school environment, to provide students the opportunity to reach their maximum educational goals, and to minimize absence due to illness or chronic disease.  Immediate supervision is received from the Director of Health Related Services, however, the incumbent has considerable latitude for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out assignments.


 Typical Work Activities
Assists in the developing of and coordinates, implements and evaluates the Coordinated School Health program for the Buffalo School District;
  • identifies resources for health services that includes local health department, district school nursing staff and other community professionals in the health service field;
  • uses the School Health Index to determine school health priorities;
  • acts as a liaison with the District’s Food Service department to monitor the program;

Collaborates with school staff, including administrators, principals and teachers for the promotion of student and staff health, to ensure improved academic outcomes;

  • schedules Coordinated School Health professional development opportunities for all employees, as needed;

Assists schools in the development of and expansion of School Wellness Teams, that will include administrators, principals, teachers, students, parents, community members and health professionals;

  • provides leadership to same in the interpretation of health related statutes;

Establishes and coordinates efforts among community partners and organizations for the delivery of Coordinated School Health program;

Researches, collects and verifies data, and prepares reports for submission to the Director of Health Related Services, regarding school wellness team status, activities and successes;

  • retrieves for health data for State reporting systems;

Oversees the administration of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, as required by the District;

Performs related duties as required.


Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of School District health care needs and District Wellness policy;

Good knowledge of health and mental health needs of students, pre-kindergarten through Grade 12, that includes physical fitness and nutrition guidelines;

Ability to understand and interpret written material i.e. policies, objectives, rules and regulations related to the school health program and related OSHA guidelines;

Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;

Ability to gather and verify information and statistics, and to prepare and analyze timely reports;

Ability to operate a personal computer in the use of application programs;

Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with teachers, students, parents, health professionals, community, etc.

Ability to lift heavy items that may exceed ten pounds;

Professional appearance; good judgment; tact; courtesy; sensitivity;

Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

 
Minimum Qualifications
 

Master’s or Bachelor’s Degree in the field of health and wellness, public health, health services, nutrition, nursing, psychology/mental health services or a closely related health field and three years of full-time experience working with children, adolescents and families, in the administration of a health care or health promotional program.

Note:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.  Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment.

 


APPOINTMENT:   Appointments are subject to the review of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent following the approval of the City of Buffalo Civil Service Division. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate
