SALARY: $83,689 - $101,827

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Associate Architect performs highly responsible and complex professional architectural work on building plans and designs. Incumbents perform work of a specialized nature involving the exercise of independent judgment based on knowledge of both architectural theory and practice. Assignments include both new construction and rehabilitation and range from complete development of major facilities to small rehabilitation projects. Associate Architects confers with administrators and engineers concerning building construction, rehabilitation and maintenance and in planning building programs (based on current and long-range program policy and objectives). Incumbents work closely with technical and clerical staff in the design and implementation of building plans. They have frequent oral and written communication with agency personnel on matters of planning and design. Associate Architects supervise a variety of technical planning and clerical staff engaged in the preparation of building plans. Incumbents receive supervision from administrators responsible for planning and design functions for the agency.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Confers with professional Architectural and Engineering firms and departmental administrators and engineers, concerning the planning, design and construction of a wide variety of building projects;
Supervises the preparation of or may be involved in the preparation of design activities, plans and specifications for the construction, repair or alteration of public buildings, including schools, fire and police stations, public housing structures, etc;
-coordinates design work with consulting professionals and specialists in many related occupations, i.e., structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilating, sanitary engineers, etc.;
-prepares preliminary studies relative to size of building, number of rooms, room capacity, orientation of rooms and presents such studies to agency administrators responsible for supervising the development of designs and plans;
-prepares or supervises preparation of specifications for materials and equipment;
-directs drawing of final plans
-reviews and approves such plans and specifications;
Acts as project advisor to construction and repair project activities;
-assures compliance with approved plans and specifications through field inspections;
-gives preliminary approval of same;
-prepares cost estimates of construction and re-construction;
-reviews requests for payment from contractors and professional Architectural and Engineering firms after completed work has been inspected;
-reviews and recommends approval on vouchers for payment;
Prepares Request for Proposals for professional services and analyzes and makes recommendations on bid proposals;
Supervises subordinate staff assigned to the division or project;
Performs related work as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of architectural design as applied to drawings including plans, elevations, sections and details;
Thorough knowledge of the requisite sources of architectural information;
Ability to make and analyze comprehensive architectural designs;
Ability to identify architectural elements in building designs for conformance with applicable standards, policies, codes, cost efficiency, program objectives for compliance with design requirements and for acceptable architectural practice.
Ability to creatively portray architectural elements as a complete design;
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing;
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with technical experts, clients, administrators, etc.;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
PROMOTIONAL
Continuous and permanent in any city department as a Senior Architect for one year.
In addition, all applicants must possess a Professional Architects License and current registration issued the N.Y.S. Department of Education and present it at time of filing application.
OPEN COMPETITIVE
Must possess a Professional Architects License and current registration issued by the N.Y.S. Department of Education and present it at time of filing application.
Special Requirement for Promotional and Open Competitive
Possession of a current New York State Driver's License, which must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
