POSITION:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates must have at least three years of Pupil Personnel Services experience, possess a Master’s Degree in Counseling Education or School Social Work, and hold a current NYS Certificate in School Counseling, School Social Work, or School Psychologist. It is required that candidates must attach a PDF or a screen shot of their certifications.  Candidates should be knowledgeable in theoretical and evidence based methodologies that focus on Comprehensive School Counselor or School Social Work philosophies. Knowledge and experience in implementing the Buffalo Public Schools Youth Suicide Intervention Protocol. A thorough understanding of the impact of trauma and poverty on student success is necessary. Preference will be given to applicants with current Crisis Prevention & Response Coordinators, City of Buffalo residency, and those that are either bilingual or multilingual.  

DUTIES:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Student Support, the Student Support Coordinator (Crisis Prevention & Intervention Support) is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services which address the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of students and families. Emphasis is on prevention and early intervention. Duties require the employee to function at school, in the student's home, and in the community, as well as following a flexible work schedule. Expectations of the Student Support Coordinator (Crisis Prevention & Intervention Supports) include, but are not limited to the following:  

Services to Students and Schools:

  • Serves as a member of the District Crisis Intervention team by providing direct support to students, parents, and staff related to crisis intervention, threats, suicide, workplace violence, and employee support related to mental health issues.
  • Serves as technical resource to district personnel, principals, teachers, and other school personnel regarding mental health services, and other issues related to the development/maintenance of on-site mental health services within a school or local district.
  • Coordinates with multidisciplinary staff, including all divisions, local districts, and school staff for mental health services, evidence-based practices, crisis intervention, and other related services.
  • Provides local district mental health consultation and expertise to district leadership and school administrators on strategies that facilitate student development and their ability to successfully deal with social emotional barriers, crises, or traumatic experiences.
  • Plans and implements professional development programs for District-wide crisis prevention, intervention and other mental health related training.
  •  Identifies evidence-based and promising trauma informed practice strategies for use in school settings.
  • Serves as resource for prevention and intervention programs.
  • Consults/confers with school staff for the purpose of assisting at-risk students in achieving their educational career, and personal/social needs and goals.
  • Provides home visits to checkup on students that have been involved in a crisis.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Attends school and district meetings and in-service programs.
  • Participates in the evaluation process as it relates to prevention and intervention, supports, programs and activities.
  • Prepares District bulletins, memorandums, and other publications regarding the District’s Crisis Prevention & Intervention programs; prepares reports for presentation to the Board of Education, other school personnel, and outside agencies.
  • Prepares and administers local, state, and federal grants related to crisis counseling and intervention, emergency response, crisis management, and the psychological consequences of trauma
  • Attends training and educational programs in the area of prevention and education when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Work with district webmaster to publicize announcements and events through the district website.
