POSITION:        Senior Routing Specialist  - Provisional

SALARY:           $50,273 - $59,334

LOCATION:      Service Center, 105 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, New York  14220

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

A Senior Routing Specialist supervises, trains, coordinates and evaluates the work performed by the Routing Specialists to create and maintain an effective/efficient routing schedule for BOE buses using computer routing software.  This work is performed under the direct supervision of the Supervisor(s) of Transportation.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • General and Technical:
    • Maintains a working knowledge of all technical aspects of the assigned area of responsibility.
    • Supervises the work performed by Routing Specialists.
    • Provides training and support for Routing Specialists.
    • Reroutes buses to improve service when necessary.
    • Investigates complaints with bus routes and schedules.
    • Creates reports and temporary routes sheets for bus routes as needed.
    • Prepares and maintains additional data and records for use in supplemental reports.
    • Provides database, spreadsheet and word processing assistance when requested.
    • Responds to accidents and incidents.
    • Makes bus route and schedule adjustments and communicates these adjustments with the carrier, school staff, parents/guardians, the McKinney-Vento office, Central Registration and other interested parties when necessary.
    • Performs related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate hardware, software and internet programs that are necessary for routing;
  • Thorough knowledge of understanding of the Routing Specialist’s work duties and responsibilities;
  • Thorough knowledge of the geography and traffic laws of the City of Buffalo;
  • Thorough knowledge of bus driving practices and procedures;
  • Understanding of general routing strategies;
  • Ability to design and create complex routing systems;
  • Ability to plan and implement efficient routes;
  • Ability to create routes within a 50 mile radius of the City of Buffalo;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer, printer and office phone;
  • Ability to utilize common office software programs;
  • Ability to analyze and problem-solve complex routing and scheduling logistics;
  • Good customer service skills;
  • Ability to use software help functions;
  • Ability to learn new software and technology;
  • Ability to train and mentor Routing Specialists ;
  • Ability to supervise Routing Specialists with tact, courtesy and integrity;
  • Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal communications;
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good working relationship with others;
  • Ability to follow the guidance and directives of supervisory personnel;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

PROMOTIONAL

Applicants must have permanent status as a Routing Specialist in the Board of Education for two years.

 

OPEN COMPETITIVE

Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and one year of full-time experience as a Bus Driver.

 

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of a current Class B New York State Commercial Driver’s License with “P” (passenger) and “S” (School Bus) endorsements.  This license that must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during the length of employment.
