DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS


A position in this class involves the performance of skilled locksmith work, requiring a good knowledge of the trade.  General instructions are received regarding what tasks to perform, permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment.  No supervisory duties are exercised.
 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

  • Installs, rebuilds and repairs lock, door checks, hinges, door knobs and latches;
  • Installs or repairs desk locks, file cabinet locks, bold and cylinder locks;
  • Changes lock combinations by inserting new tumblers or shortening tumblers;
  • Makes or duplicates keys;
  • Opens locks for which there are no keys;
  • Maintains inventory of materials on hand and accounts for materials used on the job;
  • May be required to maintain records of works performed;
  • Performs related duties as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and accident precautions of the trade;
  • Ability to work from plans, specifications, and rough sketches;
  • Ability to follow oral directions;
  • Mechanical aptitude; resourcefulness; physical condition commensurate with the duties of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 

Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and two years of full-time experience as a Locksmith at the skilled craft worker level (Journeyman).

All Candidates must present at the time of filing application an affidavit(s) from employer(s) verifying the above work experience.  The affidavit must be on letterhead and include dates of employment and duties performed.

NOTE:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements.
