POSITION:              SENIOR DATA PROCESSING EQUIPTMENT OPERATOR - PROVISIONAL

SALARY:                  $37,150 – $43,640

DISTINGUSIHNG FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Senior Data Processing Equipment Operators are responsible for entering a large quantity of information into a personal computer and by using a number of Microsoft office products and systems.  Work involves the operation of electronic data processing equipment, including personal computers and peripheral printers, photocopiers and related equipment.  Incumbents establish work procedures and review work to insure quantity and quality standards are met as well as time schedules and deadlines.  Problems and methods of corrections are orally communicated with a supervisor.  Supervision is received from a higher-level employee and incumbents may be required to supervise the work of personnel assigned.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Using electronic data processing equipment and software packages, enters data into various city systems;
Analyzes input and output problems and presents solutions for improving system;
Maintains payroll for the MIS department;
 
  • inputs payroll data including times, days off, overtime, auto allowance, etc.;
For all city departments, works with Payroll Audit Division in entering employee file maintenance changes, promotions, leave of absence, direct deposits adds/changes, changes to accruals etc.;
 
  • acts as a liaison between MIS and city departments to make corrections and re-entries of data as required;
Answers help desk calls, provides user support and refers questions/problems to appropriate personnel;
 
  • maintains and updates database for trouble calls and service requests and performs follow-up when needed;
  • works as a back-up to the Coordinator of Office Automation for user questions/problems;
  • sets up and maintains schedules for training classes and coordinates with MIS personnel;
  • assists in data conversion between various media types;
Prepares purchases orders for approval and maintains inventory of all department office supplies;
 
  • enters purchase requisitions and invoices;
  • communicates with vendors regarding orders and payments;
  • interacts with Audit and Accounts Payable personnel to insure prompt payment of invoices;
Maintains the database of MIS department hardware inventory;
Assists all departments in data collection for inventory and issues inventory tags;
 
  • maintains records of hardware issues and loaners;
Creates quarterly Newsletter describing operations of the MIS department and other informative reading for city employees;
 
  • presents to Director for review and approval before distribution;
Performs miscellaneous clerical and account-clerical duties;
  •     prepares and tracks Personnel Requisitions and maintains files for same;
  •     maintains calendar for meetings, training and other departmental needs;
  •     acts as a Receptionist for the department as required;
May be required to train, assign and supervise work of employees operating data processing equipment;
 
  • reviews work for accuracy and completeness;
Performs related duties as required.
 
FULL PERFORMANC KNOWLDEGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
  • Good knowledge of the mechanical set-up procedures for input/output of data
  • and transcription, verification, and printing of data;
  • Good knowledge and skill in the operations of data processing equipment i.e.
  • personal computers and peripheral printers, photocopiers and related equipment
  • as well as software products and systems;
  • Working knowledge of terminology related to personal computers and related
  • equipment;
  • Ability to visually review data and to identify and correct errors;
  • Ability to understand and interpret written instructions or directions, i.e. machine
  • operator’s manuals, etc.;
  • Ability to communicate oral instructions clearly;
  • Ability to train users to operate data processing equipment, read source
  • documents and use application programs;
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work activities of assigned staff;
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
Promotional
 
Continuous and permanent status in any city department as a Data Control Clerk, Data Entry Operator or Data Processing Equipment Operator for one year.
 
 
OPEN COMPETITIVE
 
 
  1. Associates Degree from an accredited college, university, technical or business institutes in Electronic Data Processing or a closely related field and one year of full time experience where work involves the operation of data processing equipment*;
                                                                                    OR
 
 
  1. Graduation from High School, GED or Equivalency Diploma and three years of full time clerical experience, two years of which must have been in the operation of data processing equipment*;
                                                                                    OR
 
 
  1. Four years of full time clerical experience, two years of which must have been in the operation of data processing equipment*;
 
                                                                                    OR
 
 
  1. An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of A, B and C.
 
NOTE:   Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full time experience requirements (Proof of education must be submitted at time of appointment.)
 
*Data processing equipment includes but is not limited to personal computers, and peripheral printers, photocopiers and related equipment as well as the use of software products and systems.
