OVERVIEW:
Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) has begun a period of change that seeks to transform the district and its schools. A significant level of local, state and federal attention and investment in BPS has characterized the last few years providing an incredible opportunity to ensure that all of its students graduate prepared to succeed in college or a well-paying career.

Under the leadership of Superintendent Kriner Cash, BPS has entered into the Education Bargain with Students and Parents. Currently, BPS is seeking highly competent, motivated, dedicated and fully engaged individuals to accept leadership roles throughout the District's 59 schools and Central Office to serve the academic, emotional, and physical needs of approximately 34,000 students through the elements of the New Education Bargain. The Superintendent is leading a talented and committed leadership team with the aim of moving BPS toward world class status and preparing all students for success.


QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have at least three years of Pupil Personnel Services experience, possess a Master’s Degree in Counseling Education or School Social Work, and hold a current NYS Certificate in Counseling Education or School Social Work.
It is required that candidates must attach a PDF or a screen shot of their certifications. Candidates should be knowledgeable in theoretical and evidence based methodologies that focus on Comprehensive School Counselor or School Social Work philosophies. A thorough understanding of the impact of trauma and poverty on student success is necessary. Preference will be given to applicants who are either bilingual or multilingual.

DUTIES:

Under the director of the Supervisor of Student Support, the Student Support Coordinator (At-Risk Connector) will be responsible for connecting students and families to programs and services which address the physical, mental, social, and emotional needs of students and families. Emphasis is on being responsive to students presenting at-risk behaviors that might lead to student crisis and/or continued Code of Conduct behavioral infractions. Duties require the employee to function at school, in the student's home, and in the community, as well as following a flexible work schedule. Expectations of the Student Support Coordinator (At-Risk Connector) include, but are not limited to the following:

Planning and Development:

    • Identifies and develops district-wide prevention and intervention services and programs related to district philosophy, goals and objectives.
    • Coordinates prevention and intervention activities, supports and programs with appropriate school-based staff and district office staff.

Services to Students and Schools:

  • Serves as a member of the Pupil Personnel Service team by providing direct support to students and parents.
  • Serves as technical resource to district personnel, principals, teachers, and other school personnel regarding student support services, and other issues related to student discipline.
  • Coordinates with multidisciplinary staff, including all divisions, local districts, and school staff for student support services, evidence-based practices, crisis intervention, and other related services.
  • Provides local and district consultation and expertise to district leadership and school administrators on strategies that facilitate student development and their ability to successfully deal with social emotional barriers, crises, or traumatic experiences.
  • Identifies evidence-based and promising trauma informed practice strategies and supports for use in school settings.
  • Serves as resource for prevention and intervention programs.
  • Consults/confers with school staff for the purpose of assisting at-risk students in achieving their educational career, and personal/social needs and goals.
  • Provides home visits to checkup on students that have been involved in violations to the BPS Code of Conduct.

Services to Parents:

  • Serves as a liaison between parent and community stakeholders.
  • Develops and facilitates parent supports coordination with school and district staff.

Services to Community:

  • Coordinates follow-up activities, supports and services to students that express assistance through District student and parent helplines (i.e. telephone, Online, App)
  • Coordinates and collaborates with nonprofit student support agencies to assist student/ families in obtaining additional assistance outside the District.
  • Assists in the referral of students and families experiencing difficulties to community agencies for specialized services.

Other Duties:

  • Attends school and district meetings and in-service programs.
  • Participates in the evaluation process as it relates to prevention and intervention, supports, programs and activities.
  • Prepares District bulletins, memorandums, and other publications regarding the District’s Student Support Service programs; prepares reports for presentation to the Board of Education, other school personnel, and outside agencies.
  • Engages in crisis counseling and intervention, emergency response, crisis management, and lethality assessments.
  • Attends training and educational programs in the area of prevention and education when appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Work with district webmaster to publicize announcements and events through the district website.
