POSITION
The Interim Superintendent of Schools, Donald A. Ogilvie, is interested in receiving applications from qualified candidates for the position of:

 

                                      PHYSICAL EDUCATION, SWIMMING AND HEALTH TEACHER
                         (International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, STARS Autism Program)

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

Assumes professional responsibility for providing learning experiences in physical education, swimming and comprehensive health education. Supervision of students in a supportive and positive climate that develops in each student the skills, attitudes, and knowledge to meet and exceed the NY State Physical Education and Health Content Standards, Common Core Learning Standards, and learning objectives of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program using approved curricula, materials, and directives of the school. Achieving excellence requires that the Health, Swim and Physical Education Teacher work collaboratively with other members of the school staff and with parents.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:                

     1. Valid N.Y.S. Physical Education K-12 & N.Y.S. Health teaching certification.

  1. Certified in CPR, AED, First Aid and Lifeguarding
  2. Have significant experience in teaching and working with students in the field of physical education, swim instruction and comprehensive health education.
  3. Demonstrate integrity, good moral character and initiative.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts of health and physical education, safety, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning.
  5. Exhibits enthusiasm through interpersonal skills that demonstrates the ability to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
  7. Preference will be given to the candidate’s demonstrating an understanding and experience in best instructional practices in Swimming, Physical Education, and Health.
  8. Candidates must be tenured with BPS and have at least three years of appropriate and approved teaching experience.
  9. Preference will be given to candidates who possess or are willing to acquire ongoing professional development and credentials from the International Baccalaureate Organization.
     

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (include but are not limited to):

  1. Plan, prepare and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences.
  2. Develop lesson plans.
  3. Utilize IB MYP Unit Planning documents.
  4. Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  5. Prepare classroom for class activities.
  6. Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.
  7. Identify and utilize different instructional resources and methods to support the learning needs of students at varying levels of progress.
  8. Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.
  9. Protect and care for school property.
  10. Use relevant technology to support instruction.
  11. Observe and evaluate student performance and development.
  12. Assign and grade class work, homework, tests, and assignments as appropriate.
  13. Provide appropriate feedback on student work.
  14. Monitor and encourage individual student progress.
  15. Provide guidance to students which will promote educational development.
  16. Maintain accurate and complete records of student progress and development.
  17. Update records accurately and completely as required by laws and district policies.
  18. Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  19. Manage student behavior and maintain discipline by establishing classroom rules and procedures and enforcing classroom, school, and district rules and procedures.
  20. Participate in department, school, and district meetings and professional development activities as appropriate.
  21. Stay current with most recent developments in appropriate subject area as initiated by the school or district.
  22. Cooperate with and participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the total school program.
  23. Foster and maintain effective communication with parents and/or guardians.
  24. Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand and reach with hands and arms, stoop or kneel, and crouch. Duties may involve risk resulting from attending to students’ behavioral needs. Unless reasonable accommodations can be made, while performing this job the staff member shall:

 1. Use strength to lift items needed to perform the functions of the job. This includes but is not limited to:  moving, setting up and breaking down equipment such as mats, volleyball     
    standards, goals, weights, and other athletic equipment; spotting students performing athletic skills such as in gymnastics, fitness, and weightlifting activities; and performing life saving     skills and lifting students as may be necessary to ensure student safety in the event of an emergency such as those that may occur in the water, gymnasium, or athletic activity.
 2. Sit, stand, walk, swim, and run for required periods of time. Demonstrate physical activities and skills that students are to learn and perform including swimming demonstrations.
 3. Speak and hear. 
 4. Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision.
 5. Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
 6. Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools,

    computers, and/or controls.
 
ADDITIONAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 
  • Physically capable of frequently lifting or moving up to 40 pounds;
  • Sufficiently mobile to ensure the safety of students;
  • Specific vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus;
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time;
  • Manual dexterity for the purpose of using a telephone and data entry;
  • Read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids;
  • Hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; and
  • Speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone.

Duties may be conducted in work-related community settings and/or occasionally performed on study trips away from the school.

Appointment will be made by the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Interim Superintendent. Personal interviews shall be scheduled where appropriate.
