SALARY: $43,308 - $48,217

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An incumbent to a position in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled work in maintaining the appearance and condition of grounds at schools and athletic fields. A Grounds Worker usually works as a member of a crew performing gardening and general grounds maintenance work using a variety of hand and power tools including, but not limited to, oxy-acetylene welding torch; chainsaws; pipe cutting and threading tool; lawn, track and blacktop rollers; air compressors; concrete mixer; power grass cutters; roto tillers and shredders; sprayers and field markers. Work is performed under the supervision of the Supervisor of Grounds or designee. The incumbent may supervise Laborers and other personnel assigned.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
· Operates motorized and manual powered equipment for lawn care, tree and shrub maintenance, including grading lawns and planting trees, shrubs and grass;
· Maintains need for all track and field events and installs related equipment;
· Installs, removes and services all types of fencing;
· Fabricates and installs utility meter enclosures and gates;
· Drives trucks for deliveries, pickups, dumping, snow plowing and removal;
· Installs, removes and services outdoor gym, recreational and athletic equipment in playground areas;
· Installs and repairs blacktop (asphalt) playgrounds, driveways and parking areas and operates required equipment for same;
· Prepares and installs concrete work for signs, flagpoles and fencework;
· Performs miscellaneous duties including but not limited to erection of free standing signs and flagpoles, custodial servicing of stadium and athletic fields, and rubbish removal from schools;
· Performs minor maintenance service on all grounds equipment including fueling and oiling equipment used;
· On occasion may operate heavy equipment (1-3/4 bucket backhoe and highlift);
· Performs related duties as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
· Good knowledge of tools and equipment utilized in the maintenance of grounds;
· Good knowledge of the common practices and safety precautions in the use of tools and equipment; ability to operate in a variety of hand and powered tools and motorized equipment;
· Ability to perform medium to heavy manual labor;
· Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions;
· Ability to work under adverse weather conditions;
· Mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
PROMOTIONAL
(A) Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the competitive class as a Laborer for one year,;
OR
(B) Continuous and permanent status in any city department in the non-competitive class as a Laborer I or Laborer II for two years.
NOTE: All applicants must have at least two years of full-time experience in the operation of specialized grounds keeping equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a current Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles which must be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
