SALARY:                       $42,296 - $48,105

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

A position in this class involves responsibility for the supervision of a repair shop in which one or more General Mechanics, Laborers and other related titles that are assigned.  The planning of individual assignments as well as the performance of tasks in both the shop location and on-site school locations is included in the duties of this position.  Incumbents work under the general direction of the Supervisor of the Service Center, with considerable leeway in planning, procedures and scheduling work assignments.


TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Supervises the installation, maintenance, repair, removal of various shop machinery and other instructional and support equipment:  lathes, planers, shapers, drills, sanders, furnaces, appliances (stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc.), kilns and related equipment generally related to vocational education, food services and other departments of the school system;

Repairs and maintains small portable tools and equipment (vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers & buffers, water pick-up machines, portable drills, sanders, routers, saws, staplers and similar power tools);

Orders parts and materials needed for replacement and makes decisions on the type of parts or materials required;

Directs preventive maintenance of various machinery and maintains records of same;

Prepares reports of personnel activity, department activities and productivity and job costs as required;

Makes decisions and recommendations as to the economy of repairing vs. scrapping or sub-contracting repairs;

Performs related duties as required.

 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Thorough knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, safety practices and accident prevention of a broad range of machines and equipment;

Ability to work from plans, specifications, manuals and schematics;

Ability to plan and direct the work of others;

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.



QUALIFICATIONS

Promotional
Continuous and permanent status in the Board of Education as a General MechanicMachinist or Millwright for one year.

Special Requirement
Possession of a current NYS Driver’s License to be presented at time of appointment and maintained during employment.
